Jessenia explains her family

Hi!

Jessenia's family looks out
for each other
I’m Jessenia Mai. I’m going to tell you about my family. There are five kids in my family: four girls and one boy. My sisters’ names are Angela, Jennifer, and Josephine. My brother’s name is Jackson. We all live with my mom, except for my sister Angela who lives with her dad. (But right now she’s in college.)  My sister Angela is the first one who graduated from high school in my family.  Angela is 18 years old.  She’s the oldest in our family. Sometimes she comes over to the house and takes care of us if we have nothing to do.

My sister Jennifer doesn’t go to school. She wanted to go to Job Corps, but she still lives with us. She takes care of us everyday to make sure we’re safe. Jackson is my brother who is ten years old. He is the most creative person I know, and is able to make something out of anything that he sees. For example if he sees a box he would use it to make a WWE belt or something like that.

I almost forgot about my sister Josephine!  Sometimes Josephine doesn’t come home, but instead just goes to her friend’s house all day long, so I barely get to see her.  My family really gets along.  We have great times everyday but sometimes we fight.  But we try to be nice to each other every now and then. My mom loves all of us equally.  (She loves me the most I bet)  I love how we look out for each other.  Nothing can change that.

I love my family.  I bet you love your family too!

Gabby Hidalgo is one of the Most Awesomest 10 Year Olds!

Interview by Emily Saechao

My interview subject was Gabby Hidalgo.

Gabby loves purple--who doesn’t? It’s her favorite color. She has a wonderful personality.Gabby loves to write and play games on the computer. You’re probably thinking she’s an inside girl--well, she’s not! Gabby likes to play outside, especially on sunny days. She wears her hair up most of the time. If you see her she probably has her hair up! Gabby IS NOT a girly girl: she’d rather wear jeans than a skirt. (She’d rather wear skinny jeans, to be exact.) Gabby also doesn’t like to wear a jacket much, it must weigh her down when she’s running around with her friends!
Gabby wears ice skates at the
skating rink.

Gabby’s favorite place to be is at the ice rink.  She loves  ice skating.  Gabby is in fifth grade.  She is full of ideas, and cheerfulness!  You should meet Gabby, she will be kind and thoughtful. She will also be trustworthy. Gabby is cool, fun, energetic, and awesome!  She knows how to have fun with everyone.  If you are sad, she will cheer you up.  Gabby is really that cool!  Gabby is also a great artist, she can draw anything.  (Well almost.)  Either way what she draws looks great!  Gabby doesn’t judge people, and thinks no one should. Gabby is one of the most awesomest ten year olds I know. She’s also one of the funniest!

Gabby is a great.  No matter where she is, she respects the property.  She is quiet at the library and listens to the teacher.  Gabby is a wonderful person and I’m glad I got to interview and write about her.

All About Cody Ersland

Interview by Simone Willingham

One day I meet a boy named Cody Ersland.  He goes to school at Oliver Elementary--which is also where I go to school.  Here are some things that Cody likes, in no particular order:

Cody’s favorites include football, which is his most favorite game because he likes to tackle the other players. His favorite football team is the Green Bay Packers, because he likes their colors: green, yellow and white.  Family Guy is Cody’s favorite TV show, and Stewie is his favorite character on Family Guy because he keeps trying to kill his mom. Cody’s favorite food is nachos, and he really likes cheese on his nachos. Shrek is Cody’s favorite movie, and he really thinks Donkey is funny in that movie.  His most favorite teacher is Mr. Kenny because he is funny.  He would like to be a cop when he grows up because he wants to drive a police car.

One day, Cody hopes to be a cop so he can drive
around a sweet car like this!
Cody really likes to go to the beach to look at seashells. Cody has fun collecting Hot Wheels cars. He has been collecting Hot Wheels “ever since he was a baby” and says he has over 1000 Hot Wheels cars.  The most scariest movie in the world that Cody has ever seen is Resident Evil because he thinks the movie is “awesome” and Leon is his favorite character in the movie because Leon does flips and kills the bad guys.  Cody’s teacher is Mrs. Ernstrom. When I asked Cody if he is a self-manager, he said: "NO!!!!!"

And that's all I know about Cody!

Meet Angel Santiago

Interviewed by Mr. Kyle

I would like you to meet Angel Santiago.  Angel is ten years old and is in Mrs. Bennett's fifth grade class.  When asked if he likes having Mrs. Bennett as a teacher, Angel says "Yeah.  She is funny, but strict!"  Angel really likes studying math, reading, and writing at school.  His favorite books are chapter books, and he enjoys reading the adventures of Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House book series.

Angel likes to play sports, and he really enjoys playing soccer.  He has played soccer for five years, and even went to California with his soccer team to play in a tournament.  Although Angel's soccer team didn't win, it was still a lot of fun!  He also likes to play football, and his favorite team is the Oregon Ducks.  Go Ducks!

Angel got to play soccer on the field
at Jeld-Wen Field!
Angel is the youngest in his family.  He has one sister who is 22 and lives at home with Angel and his family.  His two brothers are 27 and 22 years old, and they don't live at home.  Angel has a two-year old dog named Daisy.

Angel's favorite food is Mexican food, and he really likes to eat enchiladas.  When asked what he likes to do during his free time during weekends when he is not at school, Angel says: "I'm pretty busy.  Over the weekend, I either play soccer, or go to church."  One of Angel's favorite things to do in Portland is to go see Timbers soccer games.  "My coach gets free tickets to Timber games," Angel says. "I even got to play soccer on the field at Jeld-Wen Field!"

And that is all about Angel, the soccer-playing, enchilada-eating fifth grader in Mrs. Bennett's class at Oliver Elementary!

Kylee's Trip to Disneyland

by Kylee Perez

This spring break I went to an awesome place called Disneyland! I love Disneyland! Yay, hooray!  I saw Pluto and we looked everywhere for Tinkerbell, but we didn’t find her.  My favorite ride is Big Thunder Railroad, it’s a roller coaster that goes very fast.  I love it because it goes fast and people scream!  It is funny, very funny.

The water park there is so so so fun!  There is a bucket that dumps water all over you and you are  soaking  wet.  It is so fun. There is a hot tub and it is very, very hot.  I got a sunburn from the sun. It hurt sooo bad it and it stung very bad. (I didn't cry or anything.) And there was a pool which is sooo cold. I was freezing cold when I got out of the pool, so I went to the warm hot tub. I got warm and I didn't want to get out.  But I had to.  I always went into the hot tub.  “Kylee!” my mom said, “Where are you?”  I stuck my head up from the  hot tub and said, “Here I am!” and I stuck my head back down from the hot tub and I went in the pool. It was very fun and the next day I had to go home.

I hope one day you go to Disneyland just like me.

How to make a Chinese fortune teller

By Kiona Koun

Would you like to know how to make a Chinese fortune teller? All you have to do is cut and fold a piece of paper so you could make a triangle, and then unfold it and grab one of the triangle sides and fold it to the folded outline. Do that to all the other sides.

Next you flip it over and do the same thing that you did on the other side. Next you fold it like a rectangle. You could make your own words in the little triangles inside, like “you stink” or “you’re a nice person.”  People pick a number, and that is how you make a Chinese fortune teller.

The most exciting thing that happened to me

by Eddie Chen

The most exciting thing that had happen to me is almost falling off a cliff during a hike at Mount St. Helens. It was scary but it was also kind of fun. My parents were worried more than anyone else there. It all started when my cousin decided to go on a hike so my parents thought it was a good idea. They didn’t know that I was afraid of heights. When we got there my legs were shaking. I was so scared. Then I let my guard down and I fell. That’s my story of the most exciting thing that happened to me.  I still am afraid of heights but I like to go to high places.

Another time I went hiking I was a little afraid but I went on that hike anyway. It was kind of wet but still fun. I had a good time and that’s all that matters to me. That hike turned out okay.  I didn’t want to leave at the end.

The worst ice cream time ever

by Eddie Chen

The Egbers Ice cream event was so boring. Even though you would think pouring ice cream on Mr. Egbers is exciting, it is not. It was gross and it smelled bad. I didn’t like it at all. It’s kind of a weird thing to do since first it's a waste of ice cream and second it was a mess. He should have had to sing at lunch than be turned into an ice cream sundae.

I almost threw up when I was putting ice cream on him. We should have shared the ice cream to classes instead of putting ice cream on him. It also was a waste of toppings. If the school can afford ice cream then why not let us have ice cream at lunch time?

"Moving On Up"

Oliver 6th Grader Reports on "Moving On Up" Event
by Jesus Cano

“Moving On Up” was an event held at Centennial Middle School on April 17th.  The event was to show parents of incoming middle school students what CMS is all about.

The event was pretty good because there were tons of people there.  I think there was at least 100 people--both parents and students--that were at the event.  There were tours going on everywhere in the school.  The highlight of the tour for me was the library because there were tons of all different kinds of books.

The halls were just jammed full of people!  They were being given tours by the 7th graders.
Attending “Moving On Up” makes me excited to go to middle school--but a little nervous as well!

The best Egbers ice cream time

The best Egbers ice cream time!
by Austin Black

The school earned  the Egbers ice cream by reading in the school Read-A-Thon. I personally read 1829 minutes of different books.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! My name is Austin Black.
My school  had an event in which we dumped ice cream on our principal Mr. Egbers.  We turned our principal into a sundae!!!

All the students put  on name tags . We said a cheer about reading.  then, the first grade put ice cream on Mr. Egbers first.   Then we all  took turns dumping ice cream on Mr. Egbers .  We were all having fffffuuuunnnn.....!!!

Then we ran out  of ice cream, or so we thought.  “Oh no, we are all out of  ice cream! We all  are done!” No we weren’t--Ms. Nash comes out with  toppings.  Yeah yeah!  We all  shouted “Yes!” It was so so so ffffuuuunnnn..........!
